Two things take a bite out of a margin before it reaches you, and the red segment on every bar above is the first of them. The Bazaar keeps 1.25% of each sale, which on a thin spread is most of what you made. That share swings far more between items than people expect.
Volume is the second. A wide margin on an item that only moves a few units an hour is not a wide trade, so what survives the tax is capped by what the market will actually absorb.
profit/unit = instant sell - instant buy - 1.25% tax
profit/hour = profit/unit x min(buy volume, sell volume)
That second line is the one most flip lists leave out. It is why the item with the biggest gap is rarely the item at the top.

Profit per unit is the instant-sell price minus the instant-buy price minus the 1.25% Bazaar tax. Profit per hour multiplies that margin by the fillable volume, which is the minimum of hourly buy and sell movement.
